Dating Apps: How Are Gen Z Finding Their One?

Dating apps have been around for most of Generation Z’s social life, but yet while looking for love on platforms like Tinder and Bumble, some Gen Zers still can’t seem to trust them.

The Pew Research Organization reports that, “roughly six-in-ten online daters or 57% say they have had an overall positive experience with these platforms. […] Fewer users – though still about four-in-ten – describe their online dating experience as at least somewhat negative, including 9% who describe it as very negative.”

Alex Collins, 24 of New Jersey, said his experience with online dating apps has been disappointing. “People just don’t put in enough effort to have a conversation with others. Many of the conversations that you start tend to go nowhere because either the person is dry as hell or you just don’t get a response.”

Collins has tried multiple dating apps including popular ones like Bumble and Tinder.

“Tinder was definitely better than Bumble for sure because as the guy, you would reach out first and a conversation would start from there. But on Bumble, the girl has to initiate and it usually goes nowhere,” Collins said. “I probably used Bumble for 6-8 months and I got nothing out of it.”

Collins says that the “best attitude is to go into it not expecting anything. Nine out of 10 times, you’re not going to get anything out of it,” adding “there’s a reason people call it ‘hook up’ apps.”

According to eHarmony, one of the oldest online dating sites, “online dating statistics show that 20% of those in current, committed relationships began online and 7% of marriages in 2015 were between couples that met on a dating website.”

Even Collins had one stroke of luck on Tinder. Out of all of his time on dating apps, only one relationship ever came to fruition and now they are planning on getting married.

Many Gen. Z’s adults are finding their conversations revolving around relationships come to life on dating apps. There are meet-ups and hangouts, dates, hook-ups, “talking” stages, or even full

blown relationships coming to fruition because of the apps’ flexibility. Not only can users set an age and gender preference, but they can also determine the proximity of a potential partner. Every user has pictures, a biography about themselves, and their fun facts written in their profile so that you can see what you match up with before you get into the conversation.

Dating apps like Bumble and Tinder have taken to social media to joke with their audience about the fact that it’s hard to find someone who meets all of the criteria for a perfect partner. Bumble posted a TikTok of 2022 dating resolutions for the new year, while Tinder posted a letter to Santa on Instagram around Christmas of 2021 asking for all of their matches to meet their special criteria.

Although there are many stories about the negative experiences on dating apps, the platforms definitely make it easy for users to find their type! Whether or not it goes further than that is ultimately up to the user and their match.
