"Girl in Pieces" by Kathleen Glasgow is a powerful novel that explores the journey of a young woman named Charlie Davis as she navigates her way through life after experiencing a series of traumatic events.

Charlie is a 17-year-old girl who has endured a lifetime of pain and trauma, such as her abusive childhood and her struggles with addiction and mental illness. Throughout the novel, Glasgow dives into the intricacies of Charlie's experiences, painting a moving and authentic picture of what it means to deal with these issues. Charlie has faced unimaginable pain and trauma in her life and all she’s trying to do is rebuild herself and find a way forward.

The book is heart-wrenching yet empowering and it really captivated me throughout the novel. Glasgow's writing style is both vivid and poetic, drawing the reader in and immersing them in Charlie's world.

One of the things I appreciated most about this book is how well-developed and complex the characters are. Charlie is a flawed and relatable protagonist, and the supporting cast of characters - including her fellow patients at a treatment center for self-harm and addiction - are all written in a way that makes them feel real and authentic.

Glasgow tackles difficult topics such as self-harm, addiction, and abuse with honesty and sensitivity. She brings Charlie's character to life with such depth and authenticity that it's impossible not to feel a connection to her struggles and root for her as she navigates through the challenges she faces.

Glasgow never shies away from the darker aspects of Charlie's story, but she also fills the novel with a sense of hope and resilience. Watching Charlie slowly begin to rebuild her life and find her own sense of identity is a moving experience.

While Charlie's journey is difficult and at times painful to read, it is ultimately a story of survival and triumph over adversity. Glasgow's portrayal of Charlie's journey towards healing is inspiring, and her message that it's never too late to start over and create a better life for yourself is a powerful one.

That said, the novel is not without its flaws. Some readers may find the pacing slow, particularly in the first half of the book. While I understand that Glasgow was trying to capture the internal struggles and emotions of her protagonist, Charlie, I found myself becoming impatient with the lack of plot development and action in the first half of the book.

Be warned that there are a few scenes that may be triggering for those who have experienced trauma or self-harm themselves.

"Girl in Pieces" has been hailed as a groundbreaking novel that sheds light on important issues in a compassionate and thoughtful way. It is a must-read for anyone looking to explore the complexities of self-harm and trauma, and a testament to the power of hope and resilience in the face of distress and hardship.

"Girl in Pieces" is a beautifully written and impactful novel that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a powerful and inspiring story about overcoming adversity and finding hope in the face of unimaginable pain. Glasgow's writing is stunning, and her exploration of the human experience is both poignant and impactful. Kathleen Glasgow is a talented writer, and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future. This book will stay with you long after you've turned the final page.
